Newport News police said in a news release officers responded to the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and Woodhaven Road just before 11 a.m. on March 17.
Police said officers spoke with a witness who stated she was driving behind a small black truck on Warwick when several couches flew out of the back of the truck and landed in the street.
She also saw a man fall out of the truck, and had to slam on her brakes to avoid hitting him. The driver of the truck did not stop and kept going, police said.
The man, 31-year-old Robert Banfiel, had "visible injuries" to his head, face, arms and legs. He was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Police said Banfiel was pronounced dead on March 31.
The NNPD Crash Team Unit is investigating the crash and is trying to locate the truck, as well as the driver.
